Motorola despliega su primer móvil WiMAX de prueba de red en Vietnam
Vietnam Datacommunications Company takes mobile WiMAX to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Motorola announced deployment of its first mobile WiMAX trial network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company (VDC), a member company of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT). The network allows VDC to test next-generation wireless broadband services in major cities of Vietnam using 802.16e-2005 mobile broadband technology.
The pair signed an agreement in June 2007 to commence a technical and commercial WiMAX trial in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Under the agreement, Motorola will install WiMAX pico cell base stations and more than 100 customer premises equipment (CPE) in the nation’s two largest cities.
VDC claims to be Vietnam’s largest Internet service provider (ISP). "Vietnam Datacommunications Company gains competitive advantages by being a pioneer in trialing and launching new WiMAX services, which will allow us to capture market opportunities in the next generation wireless broadband space," Mr. Vu Hoang Lien, CEO, VDC.
Mobile WiMAX technology enables VDC to reach a wider subscriber base in a timely and cost-effective manner. Broadband and other IP services, including VoIP, enable more people across the country access to faster Internet connections and other advanced telecom services. An Intel pilot in 2006 called VietNamNet Bridge brought the first broadband Internet access to Vietnam’s remote mountainous province of Lao Cai. The technology company funded the installation of nearly 20 hot spots at prominent venues such as schools, clinics, post offices, Internet cafes, hotels, and offices.
Nearly a quarter of Vietnam’s 86 million citizens (20.2 million) have Internet access, according to a report from VNNIC (Vietnam Internet Network Information Center). The research firm notes that only 1.77 million have broadband access.
